Portable vs Split-System Air Conditioning: Which Is Right for You?
A head-to-head on cost, cooling power, noise, installation and running costs to help you decide between a plug-in portable and a fitted split system.
It's the question we're asked most: should I buy a portable unit or have a split system installed? Here's the honest trade-off.
Upfront cost
Portables win easily on day one. A good portable costs £250–£500 and works out of the box. A split system is £600–£900 for the unit plus £600–£1,200 for professional installation — so £1,200–£2,000 all-in is realistic.
Cooling and efficiency
Split systems are more effective and far more efficient. Because the compressor lives outside, none of its heat leaks back into your room, and inverter technology sips electricity. A portable expels some efficiency through the exhaust-hose setup and is cheaper to run only because you tend to use it less.
Noise
No contest — split systems are dramatically quieter indoors, often under 25 dB. Even the best portables sit around 44–50 dB because the compressor is inside the unit next to you.
Flexibility and installation
Portables need no installation and can move between rooms — ideal for renters. Split systems are permanent, need an F-Gas-certified installer, and usually require landlord or freeholder permission. But they add value and comfort to a home you own.
The verdict
Renting, or cooling one room occasionally? Buy a portable. Own your home and want quiet, efficient, year-round comfort (including heating)? A split system pays off over time. If you're unsure, start with a quality portable — it's the lower-risk choice.
